Hera sighed. “I’ll need to contact Zeus to get this fixed. Keep an eye on him and I’ll get the security team to move him inside, too.” She left Leto alone with Tommy.

Leto spread her hand on his arm. Unlike when Hera touched him, he felt this contact. Her touch, warm and inviting, seeped into his skin. He looked into her eyes. What’s happening to me?

She smiled and kept her hand on him. “So, here’s the problem. You were cursed. I don’t know how it happened, but you were. I can’t fix it right now, but Hera can.” She stroked his arm. “You’re not dying, but it’s like you’re being frozen.”

The revelation wasn’t very comforting.

“Who hates you so much that they’d curse you?” Her brow crinkled. “I learned the hard way that no one should be punished this way.”

He wished he could tell her the truth, but without his voice, he was helpless.

“I’ll make sure you’re in our suite, so I can keep you company.” She yanked her fingers away. “Sorry. I shouldn’t touch you without your approval.”

I don’t mind. He liked the way she touched him with reverence. Like he mattered. I wish you could hear me.

She tipped her head, then frowned. “When I left you out here, Missy passed me. She had a guy with her. I don’t know him.”

Of course she didn’t. He refused to subject Leto to Duncan. He might be Tommy’s brother, but Duncan was a rotten man. Duncan couldn’t handle not being on top and Tommy couldn’t lose Leto, especially not to him.

“I’ll fix this,” she said. “I refuse to let you stay in the stone. Promise.”

When she said those things, he believed her. He trusted Leto, too. When she smiled, he saw her in a different light. She could be his salvation.

Right now, she was his only hope.

Where do I start? This book slaps you straight into the middle of a story. I'm not sure if there is a series before this, but there are a lot of events referenced throughout the book that I feel like should have been a series, if it isn't already. Basically, the main character is thrust into the world of Gods (which is her afterlife) after she dies before turning into a vampire. This world is beautiful and full of all sorts of technology. The only catch? If you die here, then you don't come back. It's the souls final death. But, even though it is an afterlife for some, others are born there. The people born in this world have gold bracelets and the people that are sent here in their afterlife have silver bracelets. I thought this world was strange because it didn't really seem like an afterlife, and the fact they could still die was really odd. 

The characters had interesting back stories, but they fell a bit flat to me. They seemed a little one dimensional. I think they definitely had potential, but they need a bit of growth. I did think that the relationship between Remir and Lucian was very interesting, and I am interested to learn more about their backstories. I am also eager to watch their relationship grow.

Overall, I did enjoy this book. The world building was a bit strange, and I do think I need to read the rest of the Luna Rising world to be caught up. Although this is a new series, readers may struggle with diving into the world due to a lot of plot having happened before this series that is pretty pertinent to the story. But, this is an entertaining book overall and I am really interested to know what happens after that giant cliffhanger. 3.5 stars.

Rachael admired the twinkle lights she’d strung around the kitchen. Somewhere people were enjoying themselves. They might even be making love under the Christmas tree. She’d like to try that -- sex in front of the tree.

Instead, she’d pulled the chore of kitchen clean-up. She always pulled that chore and the rest, too.

She draped the washcloth over the faucet and surveyed the room. Everything appeared to be back in place.

When she peeked into the living room, Serena and Millie were deep in another round of cards. The last Rachael knew, they were playing hearts. Rachael tiptoed out to the back porch to admire the snow. The cauldron bubbled with some batch of potions. She had no idea what her sisters made, only that she had to clean out the pot when they finished. The tangy smell filled the enclosed space and made her dizzy.

She crinkled her nose. If she knew how, she’d change the scent to something nutmeg-y or pine -- anything but the overwhelming aroma.

Something flashed among the white snow. She folded her arms and stepped up to the screened-in windows. Maybe the flash was the play of firelight on the snow.

The snow glittered and mesmerized her as it fell -- that had to be it. The flash was falling snow.

She hummed the tune of a Christmas carol and fought back tears. Christmas shouldn’t be this depressing, but she couldn’t help herself. She tried to make the day bright, but Christmas Eve would forever be the day her parents died and her world turned upside down. The loss turned her sisters bitter, too. The official account said nothing about her being at fault, but her sisters swore she’d created the fog, which caused the collision.

She wished she knew the truth.

One day, she wanted to know, but she also wanted to replace the sad memories with good ones. She’d never forget her parents, but she needed to move forward with her life.

Someday.

The flash returned, but this time, a man appeared among the snow.

Her blood sizzled, and she gasped. She knew this man.

Her vampire.

“Gavin,” she whispered. “You’re here.”

“You did ask for me for Christmas.” He moved across the snow and stood in the doorway to the porch. “Said you wanted a vampire for Christmas.”

She longed to touch him, but feared she’d draw her sisters’ attention.

“You did request me, didn’t you?”

This book was an adventure from beginning to end! At first, I wasn't sure what the setting was because the girls were gathering seashells at the shore to sell and there was some kind of entity in the background that Elin could sense. So, I wasn't sure if it was a fantasy world, dystopian or something similar. To my surprise, it is a normal world but with special inhabitants. Apparently, there are a subclass of humans that come from four clans. These clans all have special abilities and their apparent reason for existing is to stop the end of times, aka Ragnarok. There are also rare individuals that have the gene to be a part of the clan and have abilities, but these people have dormant powers and are called the undiscovered descendants. Elin just happens to be one. 

Elin meets two boys within the span of a few days. One of these boys is an unregistered clan member and the other is a hunter. Tristan, the motorcycle driving hunter, discovers Elin is a descendent and wants to bring her back to the clan to receive glory and recognition. Aedan, the unregistered clan member, is on the run with his family because the clans separate the families, to make the kids more structured and so that the parents can be more productive members of society. He also discovers Elin is a descendent, but he wants to keep her out of harms way, because their lives are dangerous. Poor Elin is caught in the middle. 

I loved the chemistry between Elin and Aedan, and the literal spark they had. I wasn't a huge fan of Tristan, but I think that's because of how he was raised. I'm hoping he has some major character development in the next book and that he doesn't become the major villain. I enjoyed the multi POV present throughout the book because it gave different perspectives between the narratives. Sometimes this can be the downfall of a book, but I think it was flowed beautifully and gave it more depth. 

Overall, I loved this book and I am anxiously awaiting the next in the series. I loved that there was Norse mythology woven throughout the book, and the fact that there were clans and another society in plain sight within the world was fascinating. This was a refreshing new story in the young adult genre and I am eager to read more from this author.

[Book Review] The Last Beginning: Eluding Destiny Prequel by Charlie Nottingham

This book is a prequel to the Eluding Destiny Series. There are nine books after this, as well as spin offs and several continuation series. This is not a standalone novel.

Intended only for mature readers.

I loved this book! Laila is just your ordinary human that accidentally runs into a not so ordinary guy and sparks ignite. The problem? He doesn't want her to get caught up in his dangerous world. But, Laila is stubborn and she isn't about to let Jeremy get off that easily when she knows their relationship could be something more.

I loved the chemistry between Laila and Jeremy. I also loved that they had backgrounds and they weren't just cookie cutter characters. Jeremy has a background in drug addiction and Laila is a party girl that has a lot of interest in boys and illicit substances. I loved Laila from the start, and I was glad to see her character grow throughout this prequel. Jeremy also had some character development. There honestly wasn't any characters that I hated thus far, which made me really happy. 

This prequel has Fae, Angels, Guardians, Demons, and more. It's a prequel, so it tells the story of how Jeremy and Laila meet and how they grow into a couple. I haven't read the other books in this series yet, but this was a great beginning. There was action, romance, spice, and great world building. I read this book within a few hours and I am excited to see where this series leads! The epilogue had quite the little cliffhanger/ sneak peak into their upcoming world.
