Hera sighed. “I’ll need to contact Zeus to get this fixed. Keep an eye on him and I’ll get the security team to move him inside, too.” She left Leto alone with Tommy.

Leto spread her hand on his arm. Unlike when Hera touched him, he felt this contact. Her touch, warm and inviting, seeped into his skin. He looked into her eyes. What’s happening to me?

She smiled and kept her hand on him. “So, here’s the problem. You were cursed. I don’t know how it happened, but you were. I can’t fix it right now, but Hera can.” She stroked his arm. “You’re not dying, but it’s like you’re being frozen.”

The revelation wasn’t very comforting.

“Who hates you so much that they’d curse you?” Her brow crinkled. “I learned the hard way that no one should be punished this way.”

He wished he could tell her the truth, but without his voice, he was helpless.

“I’ll make sure you’re in our suite, so I can keep you company.” She yanked her fingers away. “Sorry. I shouldn’t touch you without your approval.”

I don’t mind. He liked the way she touched him with reverence. Like he mattered. I wish you could hear me.

She tipped her head, then frowned. “When I left you out here, Missy passed me. She had a guy with her. I don’t know him.”

Of course she didn’t. He refused to subject Leto to Duncan. He might be Tommy’s brother, but Duncan was a rotten man. Duncan couldn’t handle not being on top and Tommy couldn’t lose Leto, especially not to him.

“I’ll fix this,” she said. “I refuse to let you stay in the stone. Promise.”

When she said those things, he believed her. He trusted Leto, too. When she smiled, he saw her in a different light. She could be his salvation.

Right now, she was his only hope.

LaVonte purchased the condo Ariana was staying in because he needed a place to stay when he would be in Morple on business. If she had it her way, he would have purchased a property in Costa Mor, but LaVonte argued it would draw too much attention. Ariana couldn’t argue against that. A fully tattooed Black man and his Latina wife would have turned heads in a neighborhood full of White families residing in mansions peering over the ocean from 150 feet up. Their Black security detail carrying Barrett REC7 rifles and Desert Eagles would distress the neighbors, too. Costa Mor residents relied on A.I. security systems, but LaVonte didn’t trust computers to protect him and his wife. Persuading him to let her go to Morple without security was a chore, but he eventually caved. Ariana insisted it would make fitting in more difficult, something she was already having trouble with. A concession she had to make in order to get LaVonte to agree to send her to Morple without any of his men was she was required to check in with him more often than she usually would.

Although Ariana’s preferred Morple home would’ve been in Costa Mor, there wasn’t much about the flat she could complain about. With five bedrooms and six bathrooms, it was bigger than most houses on the island. One of the ways Morple gentrified The District was by tearing down rundown apartments that were once homes to diswors who could no longer afford their rent-controlled rates. To replace those obsolete buildings, real estate developers built luxurious condos under the premise they would serve as second homes to executives who frequented Morple for business. The initiative worked, attracting billionaires from all over the country and world to invest in The District’s real estate. Since the state’s capital was now hosting the world’s one-percent community, it had to ensure it could provide entertainment so their stays were enjoyable. This led to the city’s uptick in fine dining establishments, legislators allocating more funding for infrastructure, the implementation of modern architecture, and creating a more attractive destination.

The Jackson’s condo was on the top floor of the city’s most expensive building, providing Ariana with a bird’s eye view of the city that raised her. All of the best restaurants to eat in The District were right below her, a quick jaunt from her building. The surrounding area demonstrated affluence, but as she lifted her gaze, she could see the neighborhoods where the people whose families had lived in Morple since its inception lived. Swiftly, development pushed them to the undesirable, underdeveloped outskirts of the city. After the next cycle of expansion, Ariana didn’t think they’d have anywhere to go. This contributed to her reason for moving out of Morple so quickly.

If Ariana couldn’t have a spot in Costa Mor, it would be this specific condo. She was so gung-ho about it because the vantage point gave her a view of Robin’s home, one within the boundaries of where The District’s wealthy residents called home. Until now, Ariana never expected to spend any time staying here, but knowing they owned property that could see her sister comforted her.

Hit is a slow burn, enemies-to-lovers, dark mafia romance. It is book one in the Mafia Born Duet.

This was my first delve into mafia romance and it did not disappoint. Pina has been hidden away for 22 years so that she can be used as a pawn one day by her Italian mafia boss father. The day has come, and it's even worse than she thought. So, she gets a chance to run away and she does. But, along the way, she is intercepted by the Irish Hit man sent to kill her.

This is a slow burn, so there is tension throughout. But, Pina and Darragh have incredible chemistry, so it was a great build up. I loved the way Pina was able to grow into herself and become tough and less of a damsel in distress. Her character development is fantastic. Darragh has an amazing backstory and I loved how he was able to be shaped into the man he was at the end: no longer just a Hit man.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, but that cliffhanger is a doozy. I'll be anxiously awaiting the next book in the duet! I would recommend this to anyone that wants to dive into the world of mafia romances; it's a great starter book and there's definitely some spice towards the end!

“Lew will tell you something that seems impossible, but it’s not.”

He doubted he’d question Lew, the lawyer. But the whole situation seemed strange. “Okay.”

“You’ll think it’s far out, but I guarantee it’s real,” Chris said. “Trust us.”

Gage shrugged. “Sure.” He’d believe almost anything right now if it meant getting Rascal back.

Since that wasn’t going to happen, tough shit.

Steve turned back around and started the car.

Maybe he was just too dazed, but Gage doubted Chris and Steve knew what they were talking

about. They’d never really understand because they hadn’t actually lost each other. Hadn’t been

ripped from the scene because family didn’t believe he was gay or seen their partner waste

away.

He paid little attention as Steve drove to the apartment. Right now, he wanted to go back to the

hospital and be with Rascal. His lover wasn’t in that shell any longer, but that didn’t quell the

ache in Gage’s being.

Steve parked on the street. Chris left the vehicle first and Gage followed. Gage wandered up to

the apartment. How could he ever go back to his own apartment? Everything there reminded

him of Rascal. Once Rascal had been diagnosed with the cancer, he’d moved in with Gage to

consolidate homes and save some money.

He stood in the living room of Chris and Steve’s place but wished he could go. King and Randall

were there along with Eric and Danny. On one hand, it felt like too many people around, but on

the other, this was his adopted family. The chosen ones he called his nearest and dearest. His

own parents hadn’t wanted him around because he was gay, and Rascal suffered the same

problems. All he and Rascal had were each other and their adopted family.

Lew stepped into the apartment. “Hi.”

God. If one more person showed up, Gage would leave.

Chris and Steve stood behind the sofa, King and Randall waited by the bar and Eric and Danny

reclined on the window seat. Gage wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn’t come. “Yeah?” Gage

asked. “Well?”

He shouldn’t be upset with them, but the despair bled into the rest of his life.

“You should know some things before we go over Randall’s will,” Lew said. “Do you know how

Randall, Eric and Steve are here?”

Gage shrugged. “They survived?” Why in the hell was anyone asking him this right now?

“Not exactly,” Chris said and rounded the sofa. “Steve had the gay cancer, remember? Maybe

you don’t, but he did. He died and I spent a long time mourning him. It hurt so much.”

He didn’t remember that, but honestly, he hadn’t paid much attention.

“And Eric was killed by a gunshot wound,” Danny said. “I lost him and never thought I’d ever be

whole.”

“Obviously he pulled through,” Gage said. If he hadn’t, Eric wouldn’t be sitting there.

“He didn’t,” Danny said. “He died.”

“I see him right there with you.” Gage shook his head. This was ridiculous.

“Randall was attacked at the shelter back at Christmas. He bled out,” King said. “I saw his

parents take custody of his body.”

“I don’t believe this. You’re all standing here, so someone lied or you never died.” Gage held up

both hands. “Just… stop. Enough. You’re all bullshitting me. What is this?”

“This is where I come in,” Lew said. “I, along with Bob and Darryl at Start Me Up, helped the

others, and we helped Rascal.”

“You did?” Gage snorted. “Did you bring them back from the dead? Huh? Did you become a

doctor and learn how to reverse the damage from a gunshot wound? Did you figure out how to

keep someone from bleeding out? Did you come up with a cure for the gay cancer? Is that how

you saved the other guys? Come on.” His voice cracked. “Rascal is gone. There’s nothing you

can do to change that. No one can. I lost him -- end of story.”

“It’s not the end of the story,” Lew said. “Trust me.”

I don't normally review kid's books, but I saw this book and thought of my 22 month old son! So, I had to pick it up. The pictures in this book are beautifully illustrated and I loved every single one! The book did not hold my son's attention as long as I would have liked, but I think that may be due to age, and not the quality of the content. I really enjoyed the fact that the book highlights that we need to be able to see the good in life, and not just the bad. We can't always see the good if we are constantly complaining. I also really liked that the book highlighted things to be thankful for during the Holidays.

Overall, I would recommend this to parents that want a Christmas themed book that also teaches kids ways to be thankful. It does have lengthier sentences, so I would recommend more to the 3+ age range. The illustrations are wonderful, and the lessons are fantastic.
