“How about instead of going to the game, you come to the bar with us?” Sarah asked.

“I already have tickets, and I’m not wasting them.” At least not wasting one of them.

Sarah rolled her eyes. “You get tickets for free because of your job.”

“So?” That didn’t mean she should waste the chance to go. “I do have to keep tabs on the players.”

“Would you happen to be looking to hook up with one of those players?” Sarah folded her arms. “Some of those soccer players are pretty hot.”

“Baseball players are, too.” She shouldn’t have said that. “But they’re like other guys. They find out I’m a sportscaster and want things from me that I can’t give them. I don’t seem to find any decent guys. I meet athletes who want to get noticed and drunks who spill things and also want to get noticed.” She’d been kissed three times because she’d been caught on the kiss camera. Why did the person running the camera insist on putting her on the spot? The guys who’d kissed her weren’t attractive and none had her permission.

“I need to find someone for you for the spell,” Sarah said. “There has to be someone.”

[Book Tour- Excerpt] MacKenzie's Last Run by Gayle Rosengren [GIVEAWAY]

MacKenzie's Last Run

by Gayle Rosengren

GENRE: Middle Grade fiction

BLURB:

Thirteen-year-old MacKenzie (Mac) Lawrence secretly blames himself for his father’s death. In

his grief and guilt, he has pulled away from everyone, even his twin sister Tessa. When their

mother announces her plans to remarry barely 18 months after Dad’s death, Mac is furious and

runs away in an attempt to force her to break off the engagement.

Unfortunately, nothing goes as Mac plans. He ends up seriously injured, miles from home,

unable to reach out for help, while clues he inadvertently left behind suggest he’s been

kidnapped—possibly by Mom’s fiancé—and set his twin sister Tessa on a desperate search to

find him. But she’d better hurry, because the clock is ticking, and Mac is running out of time.

“We’re not keeping anything from you, Mrs. Lawrence,” Sergeant Hernandez said. “I promise.

It’s just that Officer Borkowski has been concerned by some of the unusual circumstances

surrounding MacKenzie’s disappearance.”

Mom’s forehead puckered. “Unusual circumstances?”

The sergeant nodded. “The fact that MacKenzie didn’t take any money with him, for example.

That’s very unusual for a runaway. And he didn’t take his bike either. Again, this isn’t the norm.

Taken together with the bloodstains on the carpet, well, there’s another possible explanation

that we can’t entirely rule out.”

The back of Tessa’s neck prickled. What was Sergeant Hernandez getting at? She looked at

her mother, who was frowning at the police woman, twisting her hands together. “I still don’t

understand. What are you trying to say?”

Beside her, Simon’s eyebrows snapped together. “Surely you’re not suggesting what I think you

are.” He pulled Mom closer.

Tessa’s throat tightened.

“What is it?” Mom’s eyes were huge green pools of panic.

“We need to investigate the possibility that your son may not have run away,” Sergeant

Hernandez said. “Someone may have taken him.”

Mom shook her head like Tessa did to get water out of her ears after a dive. Her mouth sagged

open and she slumped against Simon. “No.”

Tessa’s heart cannonballed into her stomach. They thought someone took Mac. They thought

someone broke into his room and took him! But that was crazy. Why would anyone want to

kidnap Mac?

I’m checking out the Bold Tsarina nightclub, even if it is owned by Konstantin, the Bratva crime lord who hates my guts. After all, the trip could snag me a high-paying gig for another mafia king, the infamous Caelin Vass.

Yes, that Caelin Vass.

I’m talking about the hot-as-sin social media sensation who’s rumored to be both a horrible boss and a blood-sucking vampire. And did I mention that Caelin’s also the star of my hottest NSFW fantasies? He is. Plus, that isn’t even the strangest part of my life right now… or the best.

Read my story and have some fun. You know you want to.

Read an Excerpt

Far up the street, a police car switches on its flashers.

This is getting good.

The driver's side door whips open and out steps Celin MacGregor, my would-be boss. The man does not look happy. He glares right at me.

“What're ye doin', lass?”

Huh. Vass' accent gets heavier when he's angry. Nice to know.

“Talking with some girls from high school.” I gesture to Devon and Shay as evidence.

Only the two of them are gone.

I frown. “Or, I was chatting them up.”

Caelin stalks closer. On reflex, I step backward. Soon my spine hits the glass facade of the building. It's not like sidewalks in Manhattan are super huge.

Caelin sets his hands on either side of my head, caging me against the wall. My blood heats. If I thought there was some kind of energy between us back in his office, it's nothing compared to what zings between us now. The connection becomes a charge of desire that prickles across my body. I might even be panting a little.

“I'll ask ye again,” says Vass, his voice low. “Ye know the likes of them?”

“It's like I told you--I went to high school with those girls. And you're standing awfully close.”

The whoop of a police siren slices through the air. A man's voice reverberates through a loudspeaker. “Move your vehicle.”

I go up on tiptoe and peer over Vass' very broad shoulders. Sure enough, three police cars are lined up behind his badly-parked Porche. One officer stalks closer. The guy wears sunglasses even though it's after ten o'clock. You have to admire that kind of swagger.

Caelin glances over his shoulder and shoots the officer an angry look. The man freezes in place.

I raise my hand to shoulder height. “I'm over here, in case you're wondering. Maybe you can ask Caelin to back off from both the sidewalk and my face.”

The officer pales. “I'm so sorry, your Majesty.” Without saying another word, he gets back into his vehicle and drives away. The other police cars follow.

Leaving me alone with one very angry Scotsman.

[Book Tour- Review] Druid's Moon by Deniz Bevan

Druid's Moon
Beauty to his Beast…

Lyne Vanlith, an archaeologist who seeks a logical explanation to any mystery, discovers an ancient Druidic curse on her first dig. When the signs foretold by the curse descend on her, Lyne can’t find a reasonable interpretation.

And that’s even before a Beast rescues her from a monstrous sea-creature. She drops a grateful kiss on the snout of the Beast, who transforms into a man, Frederick Cunnick, Baron of Lansladron. Lyne is meant to be Beauty to his Beast—and break the curse forever.

Now both spellkeeper and monster are targeting Lyne. She must take up her legendary role, to defeat the curse and save Frederick—and herself. Instead of logic, for the first time, Lyne must trust her heart.

This Beauty and the Beast retelling is unique in  the fact that it involves druids, beasts, octopuses and beauty's.  I enjoyed that it was a unique storyline, and I could tell that the author put a lot into the creativity of the book. The main characters occupation was exciting and the scene of the book was lovely.

Unfortunately, the characters felt a bit flat to me. I felt like they needed a little bit more fleshing out, because they just felt somewhat static.  I did like Lyne and Frederick, but I just felt like they could just be more. Their chemistry was there, but I think with just a bit more they could have been amazing together.

The story itself is only about 150 pages, so it is very short and sweet. If you're looking for a fast paced read then this is the book for you. It is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, but it is unlike any that I gave read before so you won't be bored with the concept. I felt like the characters and the story needed a little more depth, but I enjoyed the book overall.

Thank you to the publisher and the author for supplying a free copy of this book. These views are my own and I was not obligated to leave a review.

[Book Tour] Juche by Adria Carmichael [GIVEAWAY]

ONLY 99 cents for the box set!

Just when Areum - daughter of a privileged family in the totalitarian state of Choson (North

Korea) - thought she was free from her personal prison, her world collapses around her as her

family is taken away in the middle of the night to a hell-like camp in the mountains where people

who have strayed from the righteous path are brutally re-educated through blood, sweat, tears,

and starvation.

There she has to fight for survival together with the family she hates and is forced to re-evaluate

every aspect of her life until then: her deep resentment toward her twin sister; her view of her

father in the face of mounting evidence that he is a traitor with the blood of millions of fellow

countrymen on his hands; and even her love and affection for the Great General - the eternal

savior and protector of Choson, whom she had always considered her true father.

Note from the author:

Have you ever wondered what the world looks like when seen through an indoctrinated mind?

This is a topic that has intrigued me for as long as I can remember, so when I came up with the

idea to write a book many years ago, I decided to create it from the viewpoint of a victim of

indoctrination… which in the end became Areum (the protagonist of the story).

What I try to explore in this story is how deep the indoctrination of a 14-year old girl can run and

how much “reality” it can be exposed to before breaking… if it will break at all. As a comparison,

the defectors from North Korea who arrive in South Korea are isolated for three months in a de-

programming facility called Hanawon before they are allowed to join society where they go

through this process in a more controlled (and less brutal) way than Areum.

I hope you will enjoy this slightly different take on the dystopian genre!

EXCERPT

Cranes sang songs of joy from the mountain tops.

Double rainbows appeared in the sky.

The aggressors from the west were defeated. The invaders from the east were expunged. The

traitors from the south were put at bay.

The people of Choson were finally free to create their own destiny, and so a hermit kingdom of

people’s rule rose from the ashes, and the doors to the enemies of the outside world were

closed, never to be opened again.

The world around them moved on. Years passed. Decades passed. Peace and prosperity

spread throughout the world, and nothing was heard from the secluded hermit paradise.

Then one day, people started emerging from its closed borders. The stories they brought with

them were, however, not of a paradise on earth. Instead, what they depicted were horrors so

vile and cruel that they almost exceeded human comprehension.

Little had the people of the kingdom known when they closed its doors to the outside world, that

the vilest beast of all was still lurking among their midst, and as soon as the curtains had been

drawn, the beast unleashed its reign of terror upon the people, not stopping until it had crushed

and enslaved every soul within its reach.

The beast now rules the kingdom from a throne of human misery and agony.

No one alive has ever encountered this beast, but everybody knows its name.

Excerpt Two:

My father’s words echo in my head.

“Hamhung”

“Hamhung”

I’m standing in a long wide street. There are tall houses on both sides of me.

Where am I?

I don’t recognize anything, but still, everything looks familiar.

Then I notice there is something on the ground around me. I try to focus, but my vision is blurry.

There is something there. Some kind of objects.

Or…

Now the focus is getting clearer. They are bodies! They are everywhere. I jump in panic. I want

to run away, but my feet are stuck to the ground.

I’m standing in a sea of sun-scorched, dried up corpses - as far as the eye can reach. Then I

feel it. The stench of their decay stings my nose. I feel nauseous. I look down at the corpse

closest to me. A man. He looks so strange. Like all his muscles and fat has been removed, and

his skin tightly wrapped around his bare bones. All the corpses look the same.

All of a sudden, there is a movement in the corner of my eye. I turn my head.

Paralyzed with fear I watch one of the corpses rising until he stands before me a bit further

down the street of death. He doesn’t move, just looks at me with his dead silvery eyes. My blood

is freezing to ice inside my veins. I look closer, squinting against the distant sun. The features of

the man look strangely familiar. Then I suddenly see it. I gasp, and a flash of ice rushes down

my spine.

QUESTION FOR THE AUTHOR:

The hardest part about writing is…

For me, the hardest part of writing is to find the stamina and perseverance to continue trudging away day

after day for months, hanging on to a sliver of hope that the end result will be good enough to publish.

Procrastination and distractions are the constant enemies that lurk around every corner in form of

checking social media, your sales stats, or that now would be a perfect time to vacuum the house.

Sometimes you get into a flow. Then writing is easy. But most days, it’s just hard work… especially when

you get into editing, which for me takes more time than writing the first draft.

But I must also say that it gets easier with time. I have been doing this for 4-5 years now, and even if I

don’t always get into your “flow” or the “zone”, whatever you want to call it, most days I manage to get into

a writing mindset, which is the next best thing. My mind is focused and knows what to do, and I can keep

it focused until I’m done for the day. Usually with the help of several doses of caffein.

Still, distractions and the urge to procrastinate is always present, so for me, the biggest challenge is not to

give into that urge. And it’s the hardest when you’re in the middle of whatever draft you are working on.

When you start with the first chapters, you’re full of energy and I’m usually surprised by how easy it goes.

When you’re nearing the end, you get energy by seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. But right there in

the middle… that’s tough. And you can only get through by applying good old-fashioned perseverance.

And by reminding yourself of the bliss and euphoria you will feel once you’re finished and happy with the

result.

The karaoke singing stopped and a song played on the speakers. She bobbed her head. “I like this band. They’ve got a way of hitting the groove, while keeping the feel of the song hard and getting the feel of the lyrics across.”

His eyes sparkled and he nodded slightly. “I like them.”

“Dale Krieger and Scotty Norman wrote this song.” She prided herself on knowing the lyrics and writers.

“I didn’t know that.” He leaned on the wall. “I’m impressed.”

“Yeah?” She dragged over a stool and sat beside him. “I listen to them and whatever’s on the radio at work. I work at the Craig’s store,” she said and took a breath. “I guess I like the band because they really seem to get me. They don’t know me, obviously, but it’s like they’re singing my life. They understand how sometimes I feel invisible. I know I’m not a bad person or a lousy girlfriend, but I never feel good enough.”

This time he didn’t reply. He’d probably heard plenty from other people while at the bar, and she annoyed him. She had to. How many times had Sarah told her to be quiet?

“I know I talk too much. I don’t do well with silence, and I hate sitting still,” she said. “I’m annoying you, aren’t I? I get that a lot.” She fidgeted with her ring. “I got this one from my grandmother. It’s not worth anything, but I love it because it reminds me of her.”

“It’s nice.”

At least she’d gotten him to talk. “I like your tattoo.” She touched his hand. “That’s neat. Did it hurt to have the top of your hand inked?” She’d think it would. “I don’t mind needles, but I hate pain. Where did you get them done?”

“Tattoo You.”

“My friend Karey’s boyfriend owns that shop.” She nodded. “I’ve only been there once. It seems nice.” She wasn’t sure what to expect from a tattoo shop, but his seemed decent enough.

“Kurt?”

“No, Jimmy. I like him. He treats Karey well and is polite.” She nodded. “I met Kurt once. He left when I showed up.”

“He’s private.”

She stared at him again. “So are you.” She held out her hand. “My name is Mandy.”

He dipped his head once and shook hands with her. “Jack.”
