I don't normally review kid's books, but I saw this book and thought of my 22 month old son! So, I had to pick it up. The pictures in this book are beautifully illustrated and I loved every single one! The book did not hold my son's attention as long as I would have liked, but I think that may be due to age, and not the quality of the content. I really enjoyed the fact that the book highlights that we need to be able to see the good in life, and not just the bad. We can't always see the good if we are constantly complaining. I also really liked that the book highlighted things to be thankful for during the Holidays. 

Overall, I would recommend this to parents that want a Christmas themed book that also teaches kids ways to be thankful. It does have lengthier sentences, so I would recommend more to the 3+ age range. The illustrations are wonderful, and the lessons are fantastic.

EXCERPT

Tyler edges next to me, and I draw in a deeper breath, reveling in how good he smells. I don’t think he’s wearing cologne. Tyler doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who’d douse himself in a smelly spray. His scent’s probably just a mixture of soap and laundry detergent. It practically makes me swoon, though I’ll never tell him that. 

He leans down next to my ear. “Still mad at me?”

“Yes.” Despite how good he smells, I’m still annoyed he kissed me after doing god-knows-what to two other girls.

“I tried to leave,” he whispers. 

“Could have tried harder.”

His knuckles skim my spine and stop just above my tailbone. “Never underestimate the power of your rack, cupcake.”

I flush as much from his touch as his words. “Why do you call me cupcake?” I ask. 

His hands slide to my hips, and my breath catches. He pulls me against him, my rear pressed into his crotch. It’s a tiny movement, and the room’s dim enough that nobody seems to notice. His body is hard where I’m soft, and I clench my hands to keep from touching him. 

His fingers twists in my hair, and he gently tugs my head back until his lips are almost touching my ear. His hot breath shudders against my skin. “Because you’ve got chocolate hair and chocolate eyes and a creamy middle I want to delve my tongue into.”

My breath catches in my throat, making a kind of shrieking noise. Every eye in the room turns to me. Tyler releases my hair as I slap my hand over my mouth. I’m such an idiot. I’d thought he’d say something cute like, “Because you’re so sweet.” Leave it to him to turn a Hostess snack cake dirty.  

This book gave me all the feels. Cassie has just gotten through a bad breakup and has sworn off relationships for the foreseeable future. But, her roommate brings up that a "hug buddy" aka f buddy would be a great idea. Cassie is hesitant at first, but when Liz recommends their hot, promiscuous neighbor, she eventually concedes. 

Tyler is the neighbor player. He's tall, dark, and Caribbean blue eyed. What's not to like? But, deep down, Tyler is so much more. Cassie is only looking for a hug buddy, but she gets way more than she bargained for in the end. Tyler has a multitude of layers that Cassie would never know, and in the end she doesn't know what's coming for her. I loved the chemistry between Cassie and Tyler. It was so natural. I also loved Tyler. He could be an a-hole sometimes, but mostly he was really sweet and genuine. I was rooting for him from the start. 

This book had me swooning. Cassie and Tyler's relationship was just too cute, and I really loved their dynamic in the book. It had a natural flow to the relationship, and there were layers to the characters and the story. There were many times I caught myself smiling, because I just loved the dialogue between the two. Tyler is just too sweet for his own good. I am excited to see what his backstory is pertaining to his sick girlfriend and his hate of hospitals. 

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys contemporary romance. I am kind of picky when it comes to contemporary romance, but this book did not disappoint.

Where do I start? This book slaps you straight into the middle of a story. I'm not sure if there is a series before this, but there are a lot of events referenced throughout the book that I feel like should have been a series, if it isn't already. Basically, the main character is thrust into the world of Gods (which is her afterlife) after she dies before turning into a vampire. This world is beautiful and full of all sorts of technology. The only catch? If you die here, then you don't come back. It's the souls final death. But, even though it is an afterlife for some, others are born there. The people born in this world have gold bracelets and the people that are sent here in their afterlife have silver bracelets. I thought this world was strange because it didn't really seem like an afterlife, and the fact they could still die was really odd. 

The characters had interesting back stories, but they fell a bit flat to me. They seemed a little one dimensional. I think they definitely had potential, but they need a bit of growth. I did think that the relationship between Remir and Lucian was very interesting, and I am interested to learn more about their backstories. I am also eager to watch their relationship grow.

Overall, I did enjoy this book. The world building was a bit strange, and I do think I need to read the rest of the Luna Rising world to be caught up. Although this is a new series, readers may struggle with diving into the world due to a lot of plot having happened before this series that is pretty pertinent to the story. But, this is an entertaining book overall and I am really interested to know what happens after that giant cliffhanger. 3.5 stars.

For a while, silence filled the dark room, but I could feel that Harley was still very much awake.

About the Author:

I’m someone in love with the English language...well, any language for that matter. How did we decided to use words, intonation, structures to communicate? Does our language come from our culture or does our culture come from our language? I love to drive people nuts with questions like this.

I have a background in Linguistics and Inter-Cultural Communication, but these days my greatest passion is writing for young readers. My young adult novels are Sliding on the Edge, The Princess of Las Pulgas, Double Negative, Sudden Secrets, and now Shattered, A Story of Betrayal and Courage. Sometimes I write Middle Grade Fantasy and have four of those stories published.
