A man with a long dark history tries to hire them but is then killed. His family hires the team to find who killed this man with a thousand enemies in a land with a million problems.

The United Nations IPCC report, “Climate Change 2022, Impacts, Adaption and Vulnerability contains:

A wide range of … processes … can deepen climate knowledge and sharing, including … using the arts … (high confidence).

This can only be read as a clarion call for writers to produce the works that will help our people cope.

“I cannot get you an appointment with your hair stylist before this trip. The first appointment I could get you is not until the day after.”

“OK, accept the appointment,” said Sarah, “and freshen up our playlist too. You know, I think I might I go for a weave, since we have some free money. Which do you think will look best: a body wave, a water wave, or a loose curl?”

Sarah was using the Mirror-Mirror App on her cellphone to look at images of herself with each of these hairstyles.

Janet didn’t seem to care. “This new job will not take us back to the club. You have no need to look that fancy. You will be tired of all the work it takes to maintain such a hair style like that within a week. Just because we got some unexpected money does not mean you should throw it away.”

“How about a manicure, then?” asked Sarah.

“I might try a full Extendo, or Pixie Crystals. And white, I have never done white. Or a pastel pink. I can certainly herd my ducks with any fancy nails you can name, all it takes is a cane switch.”

“You do not only herd the ducks. You have to take your turn at the dirty jobs too. What happens if one of your ducks makes a run for it, and you have to go scrambling through the bushes."

About the Author:
After an extensive career at NASA as an Instrument Engineer, Tom Riley started a people-based space program, The Big Moon Dig, compatible with the needs of our climate crisis. Our climate crisis clearly must now come first, and that effort needed positive stories of people in action.

Book Tour-Excerpt] Nightmasters [GIVEAWAY]

Nightmasters, Book 2

Fantasy

Date Published: June 4 (Hardcover Release August 11)

Publisher: Acorn Publishing

Kelgan Defthand and his rather motley crew continue on their quest to defeat an unknown and terrible malevolence. They are expecting the same places, faces, and traces of evil, but an enormous surprise awaits them. A mysterious ship takes them to an even more mysterious destination, and "Others" seem to have intruded.

Who are they? What do they want? Can they be trusted?

Excerpt:

They rode out into the night and the still driving rain. The same group, Kelgan, the aristocratic di Nerrill twins, Nevander and Neroma, her handmaiden(?), two armed retainers, and the same sense of futility.

They had almost reached the Keep, as they had always before, when Kelgan gave the short laugh he had given every time he had found himself dozing off. Nevander rode up beside him with the same sarcastic jab at his “ability to sleep anywhere,” and Kelgan opened his mouth to make the same feeble jest as a retort. “Sorry, milord, I was just hoping to get out of this pea soup and into some real pea soup.” Struck by a thought mid-sentence, he revised his response to offer “potato soup,” instead of the usual pea. Nevander’s hand unexpectedly encircled Kelgan’s forearm in a grip which threatened Kelgan’s circulation, as His Lordship responded, “A sense of humor is always welcome on nights like this.” Kelgan’s heart thundered loud enough to challenge the rainstorm, itself.

Jimmy McCreadie. The tattooed man makes her weak in the knees -- he’s every naughty desire she’s had come to life. As he rounded the corner, he collided with a stack of books, knocking every volume onto the floor. “Fuck,” he muttered. “Damn fool.” He had knelt to pick up the mess when he spotted Karey coming toward him.

“Let me help you.” She picked up a few of the books. “I keep telling them this display is dangerous.” As she stood, she locked gazes with him. “You.”

“Me?” He tucked the books under his arm.

“You’re him.” She blushed, and her eyes widened.

Shit. This usually turned into him being escorted out for potentially causing trouble or being accused of theft. “I wasn’t looking where I was going. I’m sorry. I’ll go.”

“No.” She put the novels on a nearby table. “You’re the man from the tattoo shop.”

“Tattoo You? That’s me.”

Her blush deepened. “You’re quite the artist. I admire your work.”

“You do?” Did that sound dumb? “Thank you.”

She hesitated. “Would you like some coffee? I’m lousy at brewing, but I can pour it for you? On the house?”

“I’ll gladly pay for it. I’m the one who caused the trouble by knocking over those books, but yes, I’d love a cup.” He followed her over to the coffee counter. “Thank you.”

“Here.” She pulled two mugs from the rack. “Have a seat.”

He settled at the counter where she’d directed him and waited. His hands shook. The last woman to invite him to have coffee with her was Jackie, his ex-wife. He’d dated a few times since the divorce, but only one-night-stand kinds of dates. Nothing of substance. But with Karey, he felt a connection, even stronger than the one he’d felt when she looked at him through the window of his store. When she smiled, a piece of his heart melted.

“Here.” She placed two mugs on the table. “My name is Karey. I didn’t know if you’d want cream or sugar. I can get them if you’d like.”

“Black is fine.” Karey. He liked the way her name sounded. “I’m Jimmy.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Jimmy.”

“You’ve been ignoring me.”

Caroline yelped, spinning like a top on her front doorstep, her key scraping the flaking paint on the door.

Jake stood before her, the afternoon sun glinting off his aviator glasses. He was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, every inch of the denim and cotton molding to his muscles.

She shut her mouth with a snap and swallowed. It didn’t matter that he looked better than a chocolate cheesecake after a three-mile run. He was off-limits. Even if remembering the feel of his arms around her had been the only thing that had chased away her nightmares the past couple of days. He was military. She’d sworn she’d never go there.

“Ignoring you?” She tittered uncomfortably. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He shoved his sunglasses to the top of his head. With her standing on her front stoop and him on the ground, they were about eye-level.

His gaze bore into her. “Caroline—”

The door squealed behind her, and she jumped again, her purse tumbling to the ground.

“I thought I heard you out here.” Sam stood in the doorway. “Hi Jake. Tequila?” she asked Caroline.

Pressing a hand to her heart, Caroline blew out a breath. “If we have any left it will be in the second cupboard to the right of the fridge.”

Sam nodded. “I’m making watermelon margaritas, Jake. Hope you can join us.” Then she disappeared back inside.

“Are you always this jumpy?” Jake bent and scooped up her purse. He placed a tin of mints and a lip gloss that had spilled from it back inside and handed her the bag.

[Book Tour- Blast] Potion #WitchesBeBitches [GIVEAWAY]

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Dorlana Vann will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

#WitchesBeBitches

A Contemporary Retelling.

Eight years ago, the wicked witch held Hansel Lucas Jaeger and his sister, Melrose, captive. They barely escaped with their lives. Now, with high school, a garage band, and a part time job, Lucas finally feels normal.

But everything changes when Lucas sees his awkward, loner sister, hanging out with Star, one of the hot and hated popular girls known as The Bitches. At first, he’s just confused, but when he sees the tarot cards between them, he’s reminded of the curse the witch cast on Melrose.

His fears escalate when Star warns him about two witches from school who plan on using his sister for a ritual. Lucas wants to trust Star; he needs someone to confide in since Melrose thinks his fear of witchcraft is irrational. But Star is unpredictable and has toyed with his emotions before.

As Lucas searches for answers, more mysteries begin to unravel about Melrose’s childhood, Star’s motives, and his own family legacy. Lucas will have to make life and death decisions; but whom can he trust, and how do you rescue someone who doesn’t want to be saved?

“You might have something I want.”

Her voice was definitely flirty, but Lucas had no idea what Star was all about. “Oh, really. And what is that?”

“Did you happen to find my tarot card?”

Uh-oh. The easiest answer would be “no,” however, Melrose would probably rat him out anyway. “It’s hard to explain, but I needed to get it out of the house.”

“So, it’s in the garbage?”

“Not exactly.” He stared at the dancing flames. “I burnt it.”

After a long silence, he looked at Star. Where she had been overly relaxed earlier, she now sat up straight with her arms crossed. Even in the dimly lit room, he could see that she thought he was crazy. Fair. In retrospect, his actions did seem a bit extreme.

“You burnt my card?” she finally asked as a breeze came through the open window and blew out the candles. “Why the hell would you do that?”

“Melrose can’t be around that sort of thing,” he mumbled

“Allergies?”

Lucas took the sarcasm he deserved and walked to the window. “Sorry. Just tell me how much I owe you.” He was going to shut the window before relighting the candles, but suddenly, Star’s hand was on his arm.

“You don’t owe me anything,” she said.

“No?” He turned around, and Star was standing right there, the curves of her body enhanced by the shadows.
